Pinterest's Rich Pins : What Are They and Why You Should Have Them.

What are Pinterest Rich Pins

Wherever you are in your Pinterest journey you have probably heard about the importance of having Rich Pins, but so what really are they? Basically, Rich Pins are just static Pins that have extra information attached to them. Utilizing Rich Pins on your account can help grow your online presence and get your Pins discovered.

Defined by Pinterest, “Rich Pins are a type of organic Pin that automatically syncs information from your website to your Pins. You can identify rich Pins by the extra information above and below the image when you click into the Pin. If something changes on the original website, the rich Pin periodically updates to reflect that change.”

Benefits of Rich Pins

So how does having Rich Pins benefit your account? They allow your viewers to see more information on your pin, which helps them quickly decide if they would like to read more. Telling pinners exactly what your pin is about allows for a better user experience which improves your pin engagement. What differs from the normal comment description is that the information added to Rich Pins stays from Pin to Repin. Another great benefit of a Rich Pin is that if you update the post or meta description, the Pins will automatically update too.

The Different Types of Rich Pins

Product Rich Pins

Product Rich Pins include up-to-date pricing, availability, and product information. These pins can show pinners quickly where to buy these products while giving more information about the product.

Recipe Rich Pins

Recipe Rich Pins include a title, serving size, cook time, ratings, diet, and a list of ingredients. This allows pinners to determine quickly if your recipe is what they are looking for, which directs the right people to your pin.

Article Rich Pins

Article Rich Pins show the title or headline, the description (a small snippet of your article), and author of the blog post. This gives pinners a quick look into your article and gives a little more information on your pin.

How To Use Rich Pins

The great thing about Rich Pins is that they are free to use! You just need to install the tags and get your pin approved. Rich Pins rely on this metadata to read the information and update your pin, so you will need to add rich meta tags to your webpage. This gets a bit technical, but depending on the host of your website it may already be included or there are easy to use plugins!

Now that your site is set up with the necessary information you can apply to activate them. To do this, you go to the Rich Pin Validator and follow the directions in entering your enabled webpage. After you hit “validate” you will be notified if your pin has been accepted or if they need to further review it.

After your website is approved, all of the content that has the correct meta tags will appear as Rich Pins. New and existing pins that link back to the pages with the rich meta tags should appear as Rich Pins.
